Many models strutted down a New York runway with nothing but “sex tape” as a contentious fashion label elevated its obscene apparel.
After walking the New York Fashion Week runway wearing only risqué clothing made entirely of different types of glue, models reinvented the term “sex tape.”
Joel Alvarez, the self-described “pioneer” of body tape fashion, conceptualized the unique sartorial venture Black Tape Project, which included the sultry exhibition. The event was completely sold out.
At the Angel Orensanz Foundation in Manhattan on Sunday night, the self-dubbed “King of Tape” unveiled his newest collection of tape-based swimwear, captivating spectators with his understated styles.
According to The NY Post, the most recent exhibit was even more scarce than expected, with the models’ nether regions barely hidden by their stark black-and-white swimsuits that resembled live-action censor bars.
A sensual twist on the dog collar concept, one of the models’ bodies was crisscrossed with black tape studded with spikes, while black Xs served as pasties. A scant tape “flower” detached from the rest of the outfit covered the lady parts of others.
Joel says he utilizes “only skin-safe artistic body tape” for his tight couture to avoid pain and maybe an unintentional bikini wax upon removal.
The website for the Black Tape Project states that the designer’s interaction in 2008 while working as a rookie fashion photographer inspired the unusual designs.
According to reports, the aspiring designer worked with a model who “suggested I use electrical tape on her for the last look.”
Joel told her about his first bikini design and wrapped her in black electrical tape, even though he initially did not understand why she would want to do this.
“When I was done, she looked like two Christmas hams wrapped in rubber bands,” the fashionista, who presently has over 630,000 Instagram followers, remarked.
After a few years, it seems that Black Tape is still relevant.
According to the website of the fashion company, the tape wizard started offering his “creative services to local nightclubs in Miami” in 2012. He currently exhibits his creations at locations all over the world.
Joel offers rolls of adhesive on the Black Tape Project website, with prices ranging from $US9.99 ($A14.51) for black body tape to $US29.99 ($A43.54) for different colors. This allows aspiring fashionistas to test the designs on themselves.
With a selection of our skin-safe body tape that I have selected from my previous efforts, I am focused on teaching and educating people while inviting the globe to experience this new genre of body art,” he states on the website.
“My portfolio shows that I use this same tape daily for designing live performances.”
Despite its widespread appeal, many people disagree that the provocative design is necessary, calling it “impractical” and sure to be “painful” to remove.
According to a model who recently appeared at Miami Swim Week 2022 wearing a “duct tape bikini,” the tiny cossies are also extremely difficult to fit into.

“Walking for Blacktape Project for the second time. Joel, thank you, and special thanks to the amazing staff who put in so much effort. Thirty seconds of walking and 12 hours of filming. Wearing your art is an honor,” wrote Chanel Rivera.
The daring look has gained popularity recently and has been seen at many events worldwide, most notably Burning Man.
